Frequently Asked Questions
Coaching is best described as a collaborative exploration where the coach helps you to identify and achieve personal goals or overcome life challenges. There are many formal definitions but a useful definition by Sir John Whitmore (in the book Coaching for Performance) is as follows: Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them. It is a time-limited process delivered through one-to-one sessions by trained coaches.
A coach will use challenging questions to raise the awareness of the client, help them develop new thinking about their situation, and enable positive change. Coaches will not problem-solve on the clients behalf. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership. We all have goals we want to reach, challenges we’re striving to overcome and times when we feel stuck.
Coaching can be accessed in both a personal and a business context. There are four main focus areas for coaching:
- Skill – where someone needs to develop a new skill or capability, such as giving a presentation
- Developmental – where someone needs to improve a skill or capability that they already have
- Performance – Where emphasis is on general improvement
- Existential – Where am I going in my life
Client issues will often have threads in each of these areas, though generally we tend to focus on skill, developmental and performance goals.
Counselling and therapy are generally considered to be clinical interventions that are aimed at addressing a specifically diagnosed issue that is affecting a persons life and their mental well-being. Coaching is about working with people not fixing them. Coaches help clients to explore and find their solutions to a problem. In coaching there is no assumption that the client has a ‘problem’, rather that they are resourceful and healthy and are seeking and engaging with the coaches help voluntarily.
That could be a possibility if they are also trained as a coach. A coach is friendly but is not actually your friend. The coach’s strength is in being detached and objective as well as being firmly on your side. The coach may be able to help you deal with things that your friend could not. Friends will often give you friendly advice – the one thing that a coach very rarely does. A coach has questions, not answers.
Sessions typically last an hour and what we work upon depends on the need of the client. The challenge for the coach is to work with the client in the way that suits the client best – for example, we may use coaching tools, we may not. Coaching sessions are individually tailored to meet your needs and are not formulaic or template based. These are scheduled to fit in with your lifestyle and can be face to face (depending on location) but are most often virtual. Typically clients generally need 4 – 6 sessions. We work on a session by session basis so you are not asked to commit to a programme of coaching sessions up-front.
Coaching is not regulated in the UK, however when looking for a coach we strongly recommend coaches with proper coaching qualifications. The majority of our coaches have either a Masters degree or ILM7 qualification in Coaching. Further we recommend that they belong to and are ideally accredited to one of the main professional coaching bodies such as EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council, ICF (International Coaching Federation) or AC (Association for Coaching) but there are other professional bodies (such as APECS the Association of Professional Executive Coaches for example). Belonging to a professional body means adherence to a clear Code of Ethics. All of our coaches are members of at least one of the bodies listed above.
We can work with people on a range of issues in both their personal and business lives and there is no ‘right’ reason. People often seek help with work/life balance or in particular challenges that are causing them issues generally. For example:
- There is something at stake, e.g. a challenge or development opportunity and you want to make the most of it
- You perceive a gap in your knowledge, skills, confidence or resources
- You want to achieve different outcomes, improve your performance, or improve your leadership or management skills
